Fortress of Kızkalesi

HISTORY

Kiz Kalesi (literally "Maiden's Castle") is a fort located 300 meters from the mainland on a small island in the Mediterranean Sea in the province of Mersin, Turkey. The medieval name for the island was Crambusa, and it is already connected to another fort on the mainland, Corycus castle, by a breakwater. It has a surface area of 15,000 square meters, with the castle taking up the majority of that space. According to Strabo (Greek geographer), the island was used as a pirate base in ancient times, but the castle was probably built after the First Crusade by Alexios I Komnenos of the Byzantine Empire, and was extensively rebuilt in the 13th century by the Armenian kings of the Cilcia Leo I, in 1206, and Hetum I, in 1251.

The Cilicio Kingdom was on the verge of collapse in the 14th century, and in 1360, Pedro I of Cyprus captured the island at the request of its inhabitants. In 1448, the castle was occupied by Brahim II of Karaman, and in 1471, it was occupied by Gedik Ahmet Pasha of the Ottoman Empire.

WHY THIS LOCATION?

An exotic setting in the turquoise sea of the Turquoise Coast for a truly one-of-a-kind summer ceremony. A lovely and charming location that both attracts and fascinates the eyes. It is a historical entity built in the middle of the sea and of breathtaking beauty. The magnificent castle that appears to float in the Mediterranean waters is the small town's most distinguishing feature. This Byzantine empire castle from the 12th century, 600 meters from the coast, is the perfect setting for a wedding that wants to combine style and privacy.

Heaven & Hell (Cennet & Cehennem)

The Caves of Heaven and Hell (Cennet ve Cehennem), located 1.4 km (1 mile) northwest of Narlikuyu on Turkey's Mediterranean coast (map), are both natural and historical attractions.

As you approach the caves from the Mediterranean coastal highway, you'll notice the lofty walls of a massive Temple of Zeus erected here in homage to the king of the gods who figures prominently in the caves' ancient myths.

Park your car near the temple, get a bottle of water, enter the archeological site, and descend the 288 steps to the Byzantine chapel at the cave's mouth.

Consider it a nature walk: old trees, birdsong, and seasonal flowers. The air cools as you descend along the mostly shady path to the cave's great mouth, where the air is extremely cool and damp. The rough stone steps can be slippery in the cool, damp atmosphere of the cave mouth. Take precautions when walking! If you are injured, your phone will most likely not work in the cave, and it will take some time for help to arrive.

The climb up and out of the cave is difficult: there are over 400 steps to the rim! The restaurant on the rim offers cold drinks, snacks, and light meals, as well as a shady, breezy spot to sit and relax.

The Cavern of Hell (Cehennem), located 100 meters uphill from Heaven, is a smaller depression with steeper sides that measures 30 meters in diameter and 120 meters in depth. Fortunately, its walls are too steep to allow access, so you can't descend into it (i.e., you can't go to Hell).

Of course, the two caves play an important role in Greek mythology, in which Typhon, a fire-breathing 100-headed dragon, battles Zeus, King of the Gods. In these chasms, Zeus is defeated and imprisoned. Hermes and Pan rescue Zeus, who pursues Typhon again, defeats him, and burys him in the earth, but Typhon's fire-breath emerges from the earth as Mt Etna, Italy's active volcano.
